Last weekend we took my daughter and 6 of her friends go-karting.

We were celebrating Ella’s 14th birthday, and the girls were understandably apprehensive about getting behind the wheel.

But what was lovely to watch was how they quickly went from fear to enjoyment.

Afterwards they were absolutely buzzing – comparing time print-outs and admiring their trophies.

Until you try something for the first time, it’s daunting. For the girls it was a combination of a fear of the unknown, plus a natural and sensible fear of something that could be dangerous.

It’s genuinely not unlike the way people feel at the start of one of my programmes. It might surprise you to know that even when people have put their name down to work with me and paid their fee, they still have a few doubts.

After all, they’re starting from ground zero. Like the girls at the go-karting track, they’re in an arena where they have no expertise or knowledge.

Usually people have a business or investment background, so they’re not clueless by any stretch, but buying a business is a new venture for them. Sometimes they’ve tried and failed to buy businesses in the past, and they’re not sure it’s possible for them.

One of the questions that people are often still wrestling with at the start is…

“Is this really possible?”

We put those doubts to bed really quickly by giving our members the tools and techniques they need from the word go.

One of our members had tried to buy companies before but couldn’t get going – he had credibility issues and problems dealing with brokers. He was well qualified to buy a business but wasn’t using the right language to get people to take him seriously.

As part of all of our programmes we teach you how to become a professional investor. We show you how to position yourself and the language you need to use when you’re talking to brokers.

The member I mentioned who’d struggled with this was able to put this into practice straight away and found he got a completely different response from brokers.

As he put it, this dispelled any last doubts he had about whether or not it’s possible for him to buy a business.

Sometimes we have a tendency to think that certain things are for other people – they’re not something we can achieve.

But that’s simply a limiting belief and we all have the power to change our beliefs.

Right now in the UK there are more people selling businesses than there are credible buyers. It’s a good time to buy a profitable, owner-managed business.

If you’ve been thinking about it, you could make the leap and decide you’re going to do it this year.

Or you could put it off until next year, or the year after.
